Cold email
Cold email benchmarks 2026: reply rates, open rates and meetings per 1,000 emails
The short answer: In 2026 a typical cold email campaign replies at 3% to 4.5% of emails sent, a good one at 5.5% or more, and the top 10% at over 10%, according to Instantly's and Hunter's reports on billions of emails. Roughly a third of replies are positive, and about half of positive replies become meetings, so 1,000 well-targeted emails should produce 5 to 8 meetings. Benchmarks that quote 0.45% are measuring differently, not describing a different world.
The numbers, from three large studies
| Study | Sample | Average reply rate | What "good" looks like |
|---|---|---|---|
| Instantly, Cold Email Benchmark Report 2026 | Billions of interactions, thousands of workspaces, 2025 | 3.43% | Top quartile 5.5%+, top 10% 10.7%+ |
| Hunter, State of Email Outreach 2026 | 31 million emails, 2025 | 4.5% overall, 3% for sales | Three-email sequences 6.8% |
| Belkins, cold email response rates | 7.5 million emails, 2025 | 0.45% | Founders 0.57%, companies under 10 people 0.72% |
The Belkins figure looks like a different planet until you read the method: it counts every reply against every email sent across full multi-touch sequences, including bounces and follow-ups, whereas the other two measure closer to campaign level. Neither is wrong. The lesson is to know what your own tool is counting before you compare.
What a good reply rate is
For a B2B campaign with a verified list and a specific offer, we treat these as the bands:
- Under 2%: something is broken. Usually placement or the list, sometimes the offer.
- 2% to 4%: normal. The campaign is working and the copy can be improved.
- 4% to 7%: good. Keep the angle, scale the list carefully.
- Over 7%: excellent, and usually a small, tightly defined market. Don't expect it to survive a tenfold list expansion.
Positive replies and meetings
Reply rate includes "not interested," "unsubscribe" and out-of-office. What pays is the positive reply, and then the meeting. Across our programs about a third of replies are positive, and about half of positive replies turn into a held meeting. That gives a simple model:
| Reply rate | Replies per 1,000 | Positive (about a third) | Meetings (about half) |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2% | 20 | 7 | 3 to 4 |
| 3.5% | 35 | 12 | 5 to 6 |
| 5% | 50 | 17 | 8 to 9 |
| 8% | 80 | 27 | 13 to 14 |
So 1,000 emails to the right people should book five to eight meetings, and a program reaching 3,000 new prospects a month should produce 15 to 25. If someone promises you 50 meetings a month from 1,000 emails, ask to see the definition of a meeting.
Open rates: use with care
Open rates for cold email typically land between 30% and 60%, but Apple Mail Privacy Protection and similar features register opens that never happened, and Hunter found that emails sent without open tracking replied at 7.4% against 4.4% with tracking. We don't track opens on cold email at all. Reply rate, positive reply rate and meetings are the numbers that matter.

The numbers we hold ourselves to
Every Be Leaded program is measured on delivery rate, reply rate, positive reply rate and meetings held, reported weekly. Our infrastructure holds a 99% delivery rate, and we consider a program healthy at a 3% reply rate with a third positive. Below that we change the list or the angle before we add volume. The templates that get us there are in the cold email templates guide.
FAQ
What is a good cold email response rate?
Between 3% and 5% of emails sent is normal for a well-run B2B campaign in 2026, 5.5% or more puts you in the top quarter of senders in Instantly's data, and the top 10% exceed 10.7%. Anything under 2% points to a placement or list problem.
What is the average cold email open rate?
Usually reported between 30% and 60%, but privacy features inflate the figure and open tracking itself lowers reply rates. Judge campaigns on replies and meetings instead.
How many meetings should 1,000 cold emails produce?
Five to eight held meetings at a typical 3% to 4% reply rate, with about a third of replies positive and half of those becoming meetings. Tighter markets do better, broad ones worse.
Why do benchmarks disagree so much?
They count differently. Some divide replies by emails sent across whole sequences, some by unique prospects, some exclude bounces. Check the method before comparing your numbers to anyone's.
