Cold email
45 cold email subject lines that get opened, and why
The short answer: The best cold email subject lines are short (two to five words), lowercase or sentence case, specific to the recipient, and honest about what's inside. Hunter's 2026 study found subject lines of five to six words performed best and that adding one personalized detail lifted open rates to 35.4%. "Quick question" is worn out. Below are 45 subject lines we use, grouped by the job they do.
What the data says
Three findings from Hunter's analysis of 31 million outreach emails sent in 2025 matter more than any list of examples:
- Subject lines of five to six words had the best reply rates.
- One personalized attribute in the subject line produced a 35.4% open rate. Two produced 40.2%.
- The "Quick question" pattern replied at 2.5%, well under the 4.5% average.
Open rates are also inflated by privacy features such as Apple Mail Privacy Protection, so we judge subject lines by replies, not opens. A subject line that gets opened and then disappoints costs you the reply.
Five rules before the list
- Say what's inside. A subject line is a promise. Break it and the email is deleted.
- Lowercase or sentence case. "Columbus lanes" looks like a colleague. "Unlock Your Freight Savings Today!" looks like a campaign.
- No punctuation tricks. No "Re:" on a first email, no "Fwd:", no emojis, no all caps.
- Use their words. Their company, their city, their product, their job.
- Test two at a time. Run each subject line against one other, keep the winner, repeat.
Company and place (the reliable ones)
- Columbus lanes
- Reyes Precision
- your Austin clinic
- Quillfield's month-end
- the new 5-axis cell
- Fernhollow fall launch
- Northline follow-ups
- dental groups in Texas
- Brightside, 18 months
- Halden's plant managers
These are the workhorses. They're specific, they can't be mistaken for a mass send, and they carry the personalization Hunter's data rewards.
Questions
- who owns outbound at Reyes?
- still re-keying measurements?
- is close taking longer?
- how fast do you call leads back?
- rebid lanes yet?
- right person at Northline?
- a day a week?
- open rate on your newsletter?
Triggers and events
- congrats on the Columbus DC
- your new GM
- the Series A
- Fabricator Expo, Tuesday
- the second site
- your post on hiring SDRs
- 26 years
- after the merger
Numbers
- 49%
- 8% on your top five lanes
- 400 lapsed patients
- 5 minutes
- two of your competitors
- $79
- 21 days
A bare number works because it's odd. Make sure the first line of the email explains it immediately.
Follow-ups (same thread)
- one more thought
- the comparison
- Thursday?
- in case this got buried
- I'll stop here
- try you in Q1?
Follow-ups keep the original subject line with "Re:" because they are replies in the same thread. The lines above are for the rare case you start a new thread.
Referral and routing
- probably not you
- who should I ask?
- wrong desk?
- for whoever runs marketing
- Tom, a quick pointer
- could you forward this?
Subject lines to retire
| Retire | Why | Use instead |
|---|---|---|
| Quick question | Hunter measured it at 2.5% replies, below average | The question itself |
| Checking in / Following up | Says nothing about them | Re: the original subject |
| Partnership opportunity | Reads as a template | Their company name |
| Re: (on a first email) | A lie, and filters notice | A real subject |
| Anything with an emoji or all caps | Marketing signal | Lowercase, two to five words |
| [First name], are you free? | Everyone knows the field | Something true about them |
How we test them
Each campaign runs two subject lines on the first email, split evenly across a segment of at least 200 contacts. After a week we keep the one with more replies, not more opens, then test the winner against a new challenger. Over a quarter a program usually settles on two or three lines that keep winning for that market. The templates those lines sit on are in our cold email templates guide.
FAQ
How long should a cold email subject line be?
Two to five words is the sweet spot for a first email. Hunter's 2026 study found five to six words performed best across all outreach types. Phones truncate around 35 to 40 characters, so keep the meaning in the first few words.
Should cold email subject lines be personalized?
Yes. One personalized detail in the subject line produced a 35.4% open rate in Hunter's data and two produced 40.2%. The company name or city is enough.
Does "Re:" on a first email work?
It gets opens and loses trust in the same second. It also looks like the deceptive header practices CAN-SPAM prohibits. Don't.
Do emojis in subject lines help?
Not for B2B cold email. They signal a marketing send, and the people you're writing to don't put emojis in their own subject lines.
